purple squirrel Under normal circumstances, if you want to see an exotic animal with brilliantly colored fur or feathers, you would have to go to the closest zoo. Not if you're Pennsylvania residents Connie and Percy Emert. The couple found a purple squirrel in their yard. The Emerts live in Jersey Shore and have bird feeders in their yard. In an interview with Accuweather.com, Connie Emert said the squirrels are always getting into their bird feeders, and in an effort to keep the squirrels away, she and her husband will trap them and then release them into the wild away from their home. So how does a squirrel become purple? Connie Emert says people think they dyed the squirrel, but they insist that they "found it and it was purple." There is no definite cause for this particular squirrel's color, but scientist and some locals have their theories. One zoologist suggested that the creature may have fallen into a Porta-Potty, and some worried that the squirrel's tint could prove dangerous to humans. One professor says the purple tint could be from the squirrel drinking bromide-laced water from fracking in the area. Hydraulic fracking, which is common throughout Pennsylvania, is a controversial procedure of drilling for gas that environmentalists oppose because it can lead to ground water contamination from highly toxic radioactive wastewater. However it got its color, the purple squirrel has become an Internet celebrity with its own Twitter and Facebook accounts. One person ...

Living in the Rocky Mountains at 9000 feet with the Pike National Forest at the west property fence, we are lucky to see and enjoy a multitude of wild critters. I thought the sights and sounds of Bandtail Pigeons on my bird feeder would make an interesting recording. Bandies are VERY wary birds that fly off at the least disturbance. Their "pecking order" habits and sounds are what this video is all about. My camera is about 100 feet away. This morning 3 Wild Turkeys hopped/jumped over my back fence into my yard. After they ate some seeds they walked across the snow and hopped over my old fence into my neighbors yard. This tiny Orange Crowned Warbler has been visiting for the last week. It likes to bathe frequently. It is rather timid with other birds but is also persistent in its efforts to forage and bathe amongst them. The five clips that make up this video collection were all shot on the same day, from early morning to early evening. There was lots of sun and cloud all day so the light and colour vary significantly throughout the video.

The wild parrots come every day to my feeders. You can almost set your watch to them. They come at 9 am for breakfast, and again at 5 pm for dinner...I love having them around Florida

Today i walked up to two chipmunks feeding from bird seed that was droping out of the bird feeder they didn't run away.I did today what took me a whole summer to do when i was a kid.I hand feed a chipmunk again.When i was a kid i fed one acorns it just took it from my hand .TODAY the chipmunk went in my hand It took all of 5 minutes to get the little guy to do it .I wouldn't do this all the time because they can bite. but took a chance today .lolThis was a small one i don't think it knew to be scared of people yet.Anmials just love it around here or just love me.lol Thought it would be intresting to share .

Following their escape from aviaries around London, Ring-neck Parakeet's have now established large wild colonies. The birds now number in their hundreds within these colonies and they are now spreading across the south east of England. Ring-necks are very beautiful and make lots of noise when flying, in time they find feeding stations, bird feeders and bird tables in gardens, It's great to see such an 'exotic' bird come down to feed. But what affect will they have on our native bird-life. I have seen no change as yet & other birds will feed along side them. Only time will tell.

Didn't take long for this squirrel to figure out how to jump from the tree onto the cage and climb into the bird feeder. A garden hose was used to scare the squirrel with water - maybe make him think twice the next time. Back to the lab.

I hung a suet feeder up over the summer and no birds seem to find it. Now that it's winter I am trying again and this video is the first time I have seen the little birds at the feeder. These little birds always travel in groups and once one of them found the feeder it was only a matter of a minute before the feeder had ten birds on it. They all ate for about a minute and then were all gone. Birds may consume a quarter to a third of their body weight of food each day. You may be wondering what suet is . . . suet is animal fat. Suet cakes for birds are suet mixed with different combinations of things birds like to eat such as seeds, grains, nuts, fruits, or insects and provides a source of energy to wild birds. Inexpensive and durable wire cages that can be hung from branches, tree trunks, or hooks hold the suet for clinging birds—that is, birds that use their feet to cling onto objects such as the trunk of a tree. Not all birds can cling to a hanging object. One common clinging bird is the woodpecker. Jays are a type of bird that does not cling. The best price I have found the suet feeder shown here and the Suet cakes are at Wal-Mart for about .25 each.

This is a male Northern Flying Squirrel and is not pregnant. It ate too much! Relax...it ran up the tree as fast as squirrels do after it woke up!

This was bought as a squirrel-proof bird feeder, which I have adapted to hold additional sunflower seeds. Despite bending the bars to reduce the gaps, the younger squirrels have no trouble getting in, although they sometimes struggle to get out.

A large and rare to see Pileated Woodpecker visits a bird feeder in my Mom's back yard this winter 2010. He was here and gone so fast that we had to slow the video down some to get a good look at him. He's a beauty isn't he? Once part of the trail the native Cherokee would take on their hunting trips, it is now home to a variety of wildlife and some very appreciative humans. It is not unusual to sit on the deck and watch a small herd of deer grazing in the adjacent forest or see a gaggle of wild turkeys across the road or spot the occasional elk that has come down for a visit from Cataloochee. Birds of every ilk come to check out the bird feeders and the wild mallard with his mate visit the pond to bathe, watch the fish, and catch a piece of bread saved just for them. It is just awesome to enjoy morning coffee and breakfast on the front deck and silently observe the wonders of nature. Each area of the acre plus has been thoughtfully and carefully landscaped for beauty as well as function. The hundreds of flowering trees, shrubs, and plants take their turns blooming, keeping us interested and excited about what's happening next. Every area of the property can be viewed from the covered decks surrounding the house. The peace and the quiet and the ever-present breeze make for solace away from the hubbub of daily life. A mama bear & her 2 cubs enjoy ripping down my bird feeder and gobbling up the contents!

I put a bird feed station in the garden about 3 weeks ago and only got sparrows and pigeons with the feed i bought ,someone suggested trying niger seeds ,they are supposed to be great for attracting gold finches, I bought some and had it in the garden for two days and surely enough Ive had two goldfinches already,Im going to try something else in another feeder for different species.I have peanuts in one and a mixture of seeds in another.I also have suet and the starlings love them. So far sparrows, colar doves,wood pigeons and the goldfinches.

Gregory talks about birdbath heaters and how they are helpful for the birds during winter. Another test video. YouTube improved their codec this week, so I am seeing an increase in quality. Not planes...just some HD video for discussion. I recently bought a Flip Mino HD. I think it's great but does not do well in low light and needs to be about 6-10 feet from it's subject. I taped this hummingbird flying in and eating and then did a slow motion version afterwards. Even at 30fps, the wings still blur. You can see the bird feeder is slightly blurry but the rest of the shot is not. It is an amazing camera to carry in your pocket though. Sound is also pretty good. I exported the video using Quicktime Pro using 1280x720 HD with deinterlace checked and automatic for frames, frame reordering checked and encoding set to high and multiple pass (high), AAC 44.1 VBR 192. It yielded a file around 260 MB.

One of our favorite new wild bird feeders. It's easy to maintain, no need to store seed in the house, and birds spend lots of time on the feeder offering great opportunities for you to view them!

Red Cardinal Eating seeds at my house's backyard in Florida. I put 3 bird feeders in the backyard porch and captured many pictures and videos of wild birds eating seeds, especially cardinals, pigeons, grey birds. They're so pretty. =) Feel free to comment.

The black bear population in Buncombe County is growing, which means there are more bears looking for food. When bears discover food that is easy to access and high in fat or calories, they will continue to return to that food source. Many people are unintentionally teaching bears that they can provide them with food, such as garbage, bird seed, and dog food. Bears become conditioned to return to a site that provides a great food source. NC Wildlife Resources Commission Officer, Mike Carraway, explains steps to take to ward off bears if you live in a bear habitat or if there are bears in your neighborhood. Suggestions are to take down bird feeders, keep trash/garbage in a secure place such as indoors or secure/locked container, pick up fruit from fruit trees and do not leave pet food outside. If you see a bear in your yard, make lots of noise to scare it to let him know he is not welcome. Two Black Mountain residents, Anne Oxenreider and Allen Arcand, explain their encounters with bears in their yard and the steps they have taken to distract the bears. These thumb-sized Anna Hummingbirds are very young and learning to bathe. They are very cautious at first and will hover for 2 or 3 minutes just observing the little fountain. They have to be careful. Predators, potential drowning, or other aggressive / territorial birds make them quite vulnerable when bathing. Unlike the larger birds, they will seldom spend more than 30 seconds at a time in the bath. But they return very quickly, too. Often, two or three dips then they're off to chase each other around the neighbourhood.

This is a collection of footage of my birdfeeders in my garden. Filmed in late June 2007. I get lots of birds, mainly Sparrows, Starlings the odd Robin and a pesky Squirrel as you can see. The bird at 05:01 is a Sparrowhawk, the bird at 05:08 is a Wood Pigeon. Foodwise I put out peanuts, Sunflower hearts, wild bird seed and fat balls in a ball feeder. If you are not using a ball feeder then you need to remove the green nets as birds can get tangled in them. The Squirrel is a right pain as it quite often tries to knock the feeders onto the floor so it can eat the contents. I have even seen it do that and run off with a fat ball, the cheek of it !!! It is generally a permanent resident of this cooler climate and has adapted well. On cold winter nights, these birds reduce their body temperatures by 10 to 12 degrees Celsius to conserve energy. In the summer, they feed on insects, but in the winter they ADAPT their diet to seeds and berries. The chickadee is named after its familiar call which is a complex song used to communicate threats from predators and to coordinate movement amongst the group. It is closely related to the Carolina chickadee its southern cousin - and is virtually indistinguishable. The only way to tell them apart is to listen to the difference in their songs. If you want to attract chickadees to your bird feeder black oil sunflower seed should do the trick."
